John Cabot Shakespearean Sonnet
John Cabot had a presumptuous goal,
His idol Columbus he sought to best,
The sides of the map he would have to pull,
If he were to thrive on his drastic quest.
In Italia he was born and raised,
In Port Bristol he found a fine vessel
When the king heard his goal he was amazed,
Rough seas and cold he would have to wrestle.
Voyage number one was a major feat,
From England to “Asia” he had fulfilled,
Twenty pounds a year for life was his treat,
Settlements in Canada he helped build.
He bested Columbus in latitude,
To John we owe a debt of gratitude.
